It’s hard to believe, but it was 10 years ago today when Succession Communications was born. A few things have changed along the way – owned media and use of AI have exploded, newsrooms are smaller (sadly), and I have to wear glasses while I type this. What’s remained constant is my commitment to running this firm. I’ve never looked back and regretted that decision. Not once. This is not to suggest that it’s always been easy.

I’ve learned quite a few lessons along the way! In honor of Succession’s 10th anniversary, I’ve tried to distill those lessons into just 10 (which took some work, by the way).

  1. Objectives are king (learn to say no). Clients sometimes have great ideas (listen to those!). Sometimes they don’t. If they are directing you to do something that will not advance their goals, push back. They hired you for your counsel – and for ROI. Deliver it.
  2. There’s no average day. Ain’t that the truth, said every PR person everywhere. Also true as a business owner!
  3. Trust your gut. If something feels off, try to adjust your approach (or pull the plug, if necessary). If it seems right, go for it! You’ll be right 99% of the time.
  4. Be ready to pivot. If I were doing exactly the same things I were doing 10 years ago, Succession would be dead in the water. PR has evolved. We need to evolve with it.
  5. Media relations is getting harder. With the smaller newsrooms and reporters being overextended, get creative. Also, be selective in what you pitch!
  6. Find your one thing. This one’s not mine. I heard it at a client conference last week but it resonated with me. Figure out what you excel at and market the hell out of it. I’m sure you’re all great at more than one thing but focus on one and broaden from there.
  7. Everyone could use media training. That’s my one thing. I find it’s highly valuable and I love doing it.
  8. Find what excites you and do it. See #7. Life’s too short. Do what you love. It will come across in the work.
  9. Be ok with not being the smartest person in the room. I’m overjoyed to work alongside some of the brightest minds out there. It’s helped me raise my game.
  10. This is bigger than one person. That’s why I didn’t name this Fels Communications or put my name on the proverbial office door. I knew I wanted this business to be greater than me. And, it has been. From my phenomenally talented colleagues (see #9 – I adore you all!) to my cherished clients – two of which have been with Succession for 9+ years – to my outstanding partners, you all share in this. And, to my family and friends, thank you for your support, and most of all, your patience.

Again, the past 10 years hasn’t been easy, but it has been rewarding and a complete labor of love. I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years has in store for all of us!
